Beginning contact with the soil

Hello. I am Haratake, a dual-income farmer.
As such, I have planted about 10 short rows of various vegetables in a 50 square meter citizen’s farm. I have planted a variety of vegetables, while paying some attention to crop rotation problems. But I became quite careless along the way.

I and my family planted radish, Chinese cabbage, radish, spinach, corn, cabbage,
burdock, potato, sweet potato, corn, okra, yam, eggplant, watermelon, strawberry,
pumpkin, cucumber, and any other vegetables we were interested in.

As I wrote in the last issue, I realized that there is no good theory of how to grow vegetables that can be used in any field, and that farming is a matter of watching how they grow and thinking about how to deal with them (is that a given?). (Of course…) I realized that farming is a way of thinking about what to do while watching the growth.
It may be similar to raising children. You have to find their individuality and develop it.

However, I was also advised that soil preparation, which is the preliminary step, is very important.
Now, after nearly three years of doing this, I have come to feel that this is probably true. Soil is very important.
