Hello, I am Haratake, a part-time farmer.
In this issue, I would like to explain the details of three points of reflection.
1) Too much fertilizer
I noticed this when I read a book on how to grow vegetables, and the amount of fertilizer I give differs from book to book.
I also made the mistake of giving the wrong amount of fertilizer and spread a large amount of fertilizer on the soil when a small amount was sufficient.
The reaction of some vegetables to such actions was… not particularly problematic, but others created problems with size, taste, and firmness. For example, cucumbers and okra grew to be very large, and okra grew to be stringy and hard
. This may be a phenomenon known as “past its prime”.
(2) Not being able to go to the farm
Our family started going camping on weekends, and my job was also quite busy at first, so we tried to avoid going to the farm on weekdays.
Therefore, there were times when there were two weeks between visits to the farm.
That was not good.
We had a lot of problems: low water, dead plants, not enough pollination, corn being eaten by birds, etc. Oh, what a waste.
(3) Timing of harvest
One of the biggest problems with (2) is that the timing of harvest is not right. Cucumbers and okra grow huge, and the best time to harvest edamame is within 3 days (I still don’t know how to tell the difference…).
However, I think the best time to harvest most vegetables is a few days, regardless of edamame. Root vegetables may be an exception.
