Fixed field

Hello. I am Haratake, a part-time farmer.
I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet with the owner of the land I wanted to rent right away,
and I headed to the site with mixed feelings of anxiety and anticipation.
When I arrived, they were in the middle of mowing the grass.
They owned a vast amount of land, and I worried unnecessarily that mowing the grass must be a lot of work.

Apparently, this land has been passed down through generations, but they have since stopped farming.
Since I mentioned natural farming during our first phone call, they seemed to appreciate that aspect as well.
However, since I plan to let the grass grow freely, I’m not sure how it will turn out.

Initially, I was thinking of around 3000m2, but it was agreed that starting with such a large area would be too much,
so I was shown two suitable plots of land.
It’s important to make decisions based on actually seeing the site rather than just discussing numbers.
After seeing the actual size, I thought, “Yeah, this should work.”
Based on my rough measurements and calculations, it’s roughly 350 square meters.

After discussing it, we were able to borrow the land for free, and we can even use the water supply!!
How generous! However, they emphasized that we must properly maintain the grass. I’ll need to buy a lawn mower.
There’s an irrigation ditch nearby, but there are annual usage limits, and there are days when we have to clean it together,
so using it without permission would be theft. That makes sense.
The surrounding area is mostly rice fields, so water is essential.

And so, the land we’ll be cultivating in the future has been decided.
