Weeds grow thick after rain

Hello. This is Haratake, a part-time farmer.

Next up is Field No. 2. As expected, the weeds have grown rampant. I mowed the weeds along the side road before Obon, but they have grown back quite a bit.

This blog is titled “Walking the Path of Natural Farming”! I’ve tried not to mow the grass as much as possible, but it’s now taller than the edamame, eggplants, and okra. This is making photosynthesis difficult, and some of the seedlings are turning pale green. The real problem may be that the eggplants, edamame, and tomatoes haven’t fully matured yet, even though summer is almost over. We need to make sure the crops have reached a certain stage of growth before summer begins and the grass starts growing rapidly.

However, the edamame beans are not growing very large overall. The news on TV also reported that the growth of edamame beans is poor due to the extreme heat. In the case of Field 2, the fertilizer, mainly leaf mold, that was spread when the ridges were built seems to have made the beans slightly larger in the ridges where more was spread.

It looks like we’ll be continuing to mow the grass for a while. Currently, I’m using a rechargeable grass trimmer costing 5,000 yen, but we’re considering additional investments or using a sickle for mowing. In areas where crops are growing densely, the grass trimmer is difficult to use, and we’ve accidentally cut some of the edamame that were growing there.

That’s all for now! See you next time!
