Thriving

Hello. I’m Haratake, a part-time farmer.

Today I went to Field 1. The forecast called for sunny weather, but the moment I arrived at the farm, it started raining. And it was a decent amount of rain. I decided to wrap up work early.

The Chinese cabbage has grown quite large. The outer leaves show signs of insect damage. Maybe crickets? Or perhaps cutworms? At least I can breathe a sigh of relief that they’ve grown this big. The cabbages in Field 2 were almost completely wiped out by insects while they were still small leaves. I’m curious to see how the few surviving plants will fare going forward. For now, let’s just keep a warm eye on these cabbages.

The potatoes are looking good too. I tried planting potatoes in the ridges using the Kin-chan farming method, and it’s working out quite well. The melon bed, however, still feels like it needs a little more work. If the potatoes don’t grow well here, I might be seriously disappointed in this bed. For now, though, they’re growing strong.

And finally, the sweet potatoes. Somehow, even though it’s November, the leaves still look fresh and young. Plus, the vines are stretching out in all directions. They’re even encroaching on the surrounding beds. Hmm, feels like they’re going a bit overboard. I think this every year, but you never really know when to harvest sweet potatoes, do you!? The leaves are still so green and lush—is that okay? Or should I harvest them while they’re still young like this? Some fields nearby have already been harvested. Maybe I’ll try harvesting some soon this year…

Well then, see you next time~
